El Campeonato Mundial de Pilotos se lleva celebrando desde 1950. Los registros de los pilotos que se enumeran aquí incluyen todas las rondas que formaron parte del Campeonato Mundial desde 1950: esto incluye las 500 Millas de Indianápolis de 1950 a 1960 (aunque no se corrió según las reglas de Fórmula Uno ) y los Grandes Premios del Campeonato Mundial de 1952 y 1953 (que se corrieron según las reglas de Fórmula Dos ). Las carreras de Fórmula Uno que no fueron rondas de clasificación para el Campeonato Mundial no están incluidas, y los sprints solo se incluyen cuando se especifica.
Se considera que los pilotos están inscritos en una carrera si intentan competir en al menos una sesión de entrenamientos oficiales con la intención de participar en la carrera. Estos pilotos se anotan en la lista de inscritos para esa carrera. Se considera que un piloto ha comenzado una carrera si se alinea en la parrilla o en la salida de boxes para el inicio de la carrera. Si una carrera se detiene y se reinicia, la participación en cualquier parte de la carrera se contabiliza solo si esa parte se contabilizó de alguna manera para la clasificación final (por ejemplo, las carreras detenidas antes del final de la segunda vuelta del líder se declararon nulas antes de 2005).
