Esta lista de nucleidos muestra los nucleidos observados que son estables o, si son radiactivos, tienen vidas medias mayores a una hora. Esto representa los isótopos de los primeros 105 elementos, excepto los elementos 87 ( francio ), 102 ( nobelio ) y 104 ( rutherfordio ). Se han caracterizado experimentalmente al menos 3300 nucleidos [1] (ver Lista de nucleidos radiactivos por vida media para los nucleidos con vidas medias de desintegración menores a una hora).
Un nucleido se define convencionalmente como una colección de protones y neutrones unidos y examinados experimentalmente que son estables o tienen un modo de desintegración observado .
Existen 251 nucleidos conocidos denominados estables . Muchos de ellos, en teoría, podrían desintegrarse mediante fisión espontánea , desintegración alfa , desintegración beta doble , etc., con una vida media muy larga , pero aún no se ha observado ninguna desintegración radiactiva . Por lo tanto, el número de nucleidos estables está sujeto a cambios si se determina que algunos de estos 251 son nucleidos radiactivos de vida muy larga en el futuro. En este artículo, los nucleidos "estables" se dividen en tres tablas: una para los nucleidos que son teóricamente estables (lo que significa que no es posible ningún modo de desintegración) y los nucleidos que teóricamente pueden experimentar fisión espontánea pero que no se han evaluado para comprobar si hay evidencia de que esto sucede; una para los nucleidos que teóricamente pueden experimentar formas de desintegración distintas de la fisión espontánea pero que no se han evaluado; y, por último, una tabla de nucleidos que teóricamente pueden desintegrarse y que se han evaluado pero sin detectar ninguna desintegración. En esta última tabla, en la que se ha predicho una desintegración teóricamente pero nunca se ha observado experimentalmente (ni directamente ni mediante la detección de un exceso de la hija), el modo de desintegración teórica se da entre paréntesis y se indica con " > número " en la columna de vida media para mostrar el límite inferior de la vida media según la observación experimental. Se considera que estos nucleidos son "estables" hasta que se ha observado una desintegración de algún modo. Por ejemplo, se informó que el telurio-123 era radiactivo, pero el mismo grupo experimental se retractó posteriormente de este informe y actualmente sigue siendo observablemente estable.
El siguiente grupo son los nucleidos radiactivos primordiales. Se ha comprobado que son radiactivos o se han identificado productos de desintegración en muestras naturales (telurio-128, bario-130). Hay 35 de ellos (ver estos nucleidos), de los cuales 25 tienen vidas medias más largas que10 13 años. En la mayoría de estos 25, la desintegración es difícil de observar y, para la mayoría de los propósitos, se los puede considerar efectivamente estables. El bismuto-209 es notable porque es el único isótopo natural de un elemento que durante mucho tiempo se consideró estable. Otros 10 nucleidos, platino-190 , samario-147 , lantano-138 , rubidio- 87 , renio-187 , lutecio-176 , torio-232 , uranio-238 , potasio-40 y uranio-235 tienen vidas medias de entre7,0 × 10 8 y4,83 × 10 11 años, lo que significa que han experimentado al menos un agotamiento del 0,5% desde la formación del Sistema Solar aproximadamenteHace 4,6 × 10 9 años, pero todavía existen en la Tierra en cantidades significativas. Son la fuente principal de calentamiento radiogénico y productos de desintegración radiactiva. En conjunto, hay un total de 286 nucleidos primordiales . [a]
La lista cubre luego los ~700 radionucleidos con vidas medias mayores a 1 hora, divididos en dos tablas, vidas medias mayores a un día y vidas medias menores a un día.
Se pueden detectar en la naturaleza más de 60 nucleidos que tienen vidas medias demasiado cortas para ser primordiales como resultado de la producción posterior por procesos naturales, principalmente en cantidades traza. Estos incluyen ~44 radionucleidos que se producen en las cadenas de desintegración del uranio y el torio primordiales ( nucleidos radiogénicos ), como el radón-222 . Otros son el producto de interacciones con rayos cósmicos energéticos (por ejemplo, espalación de rayos cósmicos) ( nucleidos cosmogénicos ), como el carbono-14. Esto da un total de aproximadamente 350 nucleidos de origen natural. Otros nucleidos pueden producirse ocasionalmente de forma natural por interacciones cosmogénicas raras o como resultado de otras reacciones nucleares naturales ( nucleidos nucleogénicos ), pero son difíciles de detectar.
Se han detectado otros nucleidos de vida más corta en los espectros de las estrellas, como los isótopos de tecnecio, prometio y algunos actínidos. Los nucleidos restantes se conocen únicamente a partir de la transmutación nuclear artificial . Algunos, como el cesio-137 , se encuentran en el medio ambiente, pero como resultado de la contaminación por liberaciones de productos de fisión nuclear artificiales (de armas nucleares, reactores nucleares y otros procesos). Otros se producen artificialmente con fines industriales o médicos.
Cada grupo de radionucleidos, comenzando por los radionucleidos primordiales de vida más larga, se ordena por vida media decreciente, pero las tablas se pueden ordenar por otras columnas.
