Speedy deletion nomination of Category:1576 in Portuguese Mozambique
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. LizRead!Talk! 09:12, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's confusing to tag all of these empty categories that weren't marked as being part of a CFD discussion and have them all disappear. Is this how it is done? Should I just delete any more I come across that look like they are associated with a CFD discussion? I've gotten in trouble for doing that before. LizRead!Talk! 21:52, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I was happier that you left these for manual deletion. In this case I chose to redirect one because a former subcat had a cat header template that will resolve the redirect. IMHO it would be best practice to tag and list them all in the nomination, after which the list can be given to the bot, but that can be a lot of work. – Fayenatic London 08:38, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Liz: Thank you for this note. Yes, I believe those category pages should be restored and redeleted. Firefangledfeathers deleted them but can't be blamed as it was Marcocapelle who tagged them with {{db-xfd}}. Marcocapelle did include a link to the discussion, but that template does not put that into the default edit summary. Perhaps we can edit db-xfd to do so. Meanwhile, Marcocapelle, please append db-xfd rather than replacing the page content, so that the deleting admin at least has the opportunity to use the "delete" link in the CFD template, which pre-fills the deletion log edit summary. – Fayenatic London 08:38, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
By default I am copying the db-xfd script, including the date of the discussion, to the edit summary. Do you mean that this does not suffice? Marcocapelle (talk) 08:44, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, that does not suffice. Only admins will have access to that edit summary after deletion, and even they would have to go to the bother of viewing the page history. We want the discussion link to be left in the deletion log entry. {{Cfd all}} facilitates this, but db-xfd does not ATM. – Fayenatic London 08:49, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On further inspection I see that db-xfd does make use of the XFD link if provided, and in that case you did provide a link to the CFD log page albeit not to the discussion, viz. {{db-xfd|votepage=Log/2024_July_6}}. However, Firefangledfeathers seems to have used another deletion script rather than clicking the deletion link in the template. Firefangledfeathers, please amend your practices to leave a link to the discussion in the deletion log, rather than a bland reference to G6. – Fayenatic London 09:22, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I plan to! Liz already got me the memo. I can restore and redelete

Category tagged for renaming but no CFR discussion started
Hey there - I see that you tagged Category:Wikipedia template parameter issues for renaming back on July 13, but I just looked around and haven't been able to find an actual discussion started about it over at WP:CFR. Figured I should let you know in case you may have forgotten to open a discussion when the tag was added. 🔹Blue (talk/contribs) 14:57, 24 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Following an RfC, there is a new criterion for speedy deletion: C4, which applies to unused maintenance categories, such as empty dated maintenance categories for dates in the past.
The arbitration case Historical Elections is currently open. Proposed decision is expected by 3 September 2024 for this case.

Your recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by SafariScribe was:
This submission's references do not show that the subject qualifies for a Wikipedia article—that is, they do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject (see the guidelines on the notability of people). Before any resubmission, additional references meeting these criteria should be added (see technical help and learn about mistakes to avoid when addressing this issue). If no additional references exist, the subject is not suitable for Wikipedia.
Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit after they have been resolved.
If you would like to continue working on the submission, go to Draft:Corneliu Bârlădeanu and click on the "Edit" tab at the top of the window.
If you do not edit your draft in the next 6 months, it will be considered abandoned and may be deleted.
Following a discussion, the speedy deletion reason "File pages without a corresponding file" has been moved from criterion G8 to F2. This does not change what can be speedily deleted.
I would like to know why you decided to delete my hard work? I have never vandalized anything here on Wikipedia and I have always followed the rules. What did I do to you? It's because of attitudes like yours that I'm thinking about abandoning Wikipedia, because I thought they only deleted articles and categories from those who vandalized Wikipedia...
All my hard work was for nothing... MafiaBoy123 (talk) 13:05, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi MafiaBoy123, somebody else noticed first that there was a category just for 2 brothers. The purpose of categories is to enable readers to navigate between related pages, but those cases were already linked, so the category added nothing to Wikipedia navigation. I checked what else was in the hierarchies around that category, and found a very similar one with only two sisters, which clearly should be decided the same way as the one with two brothers.
I can't find any articles about e.g. political families of Kyrgyzstan.
So, if those two categories were deleted, the two parent categories would become empty, so they would also be deleted. Some editors would have left them to be deleted later, leaving no trace of the reason, but I consider that it is fairer to list such parents in a nomination, so that anybody looking for those categories later can follow the links and see WHY they were deleted. In this case they would see that the name was correct (it's not as if e.g. "Kyrgyzstani" should be "Kyrgyz"), but the categories were merely deleted for the time being because there were not sufficient contents as to need a navigational hierarchy.
I did also look around Category:Families by nationality to see if other countries had categories for families with very little content. Some had only two sub-cats, but in those cases they had more members, or the members were articles actually about families rather than individuals; either way, the categories are worth keeping.
I hope that helps you understand. We don't create every category into which we could theoretically place an article. We only create/keep categories that are useful for navigation. Best wishes, – Fayenatic London 13:44, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I wondered what you meant by "all my hard work", as you have plenty of other good work here that nobody is deleting. Then I realised that you have created a few more 2-page subcats in Category:Mixed martial arts families. I suggest that you tag them with {{db-author}} yourself, if you don't want to be upset by other people nominating them. – Fayenatic London 13:53, 17 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
